Monsignor Thomas Groenewold was especially loved by many in St. Agnes Parish and his passing in 2008 touched the hearts of many of us. In his memory, a group of parishioners have donated a crucifix for the Parish Center. It is unique in that it is an “icon” cross, which means that the figure of Christ (and in this case the auxiliary figures) are painted.
The original San Damiano Cross was the cross through which Saint Francis of Assisi received his commission from Christ: “Rebuild my Church.”
The cross in memory of Father Tom was blessed and dedicated at an Evening Prayer Service on Thursday, November 13, 2009.
The following explanation of the meaning of the San Damiano Cross is reproduced here from the Franciscan Friars, Third Order Regular of St. Francis, Province of the Immaculate Conception.
