Dear Parishioners:

I write with information on what we and other parishes in our diocese are doing as we face these challenging times.  Upon the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control that all events involving 50 or more people be suspended or postponed and in an effort to promote the health and safety of all people, I bring the following to your attention:

1. Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 at 3:00 PM, all Masses (weekday and weekend), will be closed to a congregation.  All meetings, and non-essential activities in our parishes have been suspended or postponed through Tuesday, April 14, 2020.  As in the case of daily and Sunday Mass, Holy Week and Easter Liturgies will also be closed to a congregation.  They will, however, be televised and available online (see number 4 below).

2. Funerals and weddings may be permitted if necessary, but will be limited to immediate family and cannot exceed more than 50 people in attendance.  Baptisms are postponed unless absolutely necessary and should observe the same limits.

3. We will keep the Cathedral open as much as possible from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm for private prayer.  (There may be times that we will have to adjust this and we ask for your patience as we meet diocesan needs.)  We will be keeping a watchful eye out to ensure that the number of people in the cathedral at any given time does not present a safety concern.  Please remember the recommendation of our health professionals that we maintain a certain physical distance from one another.

4. The Catholic Faith Network (CFN) will provide televised and online daily Masses, including Holy Week and Easter Liturgies, as well as other devotional and spiritual programs.  (Optimum channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS TV channel 296, and Spectrum channel 162/471.)  CFN is also available on selected cable and satellite systems and through 24/7 live stream at CFNtv.org. You can also watch CFN on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android, or by downloading the CFN iOS mobile app at the app store by searching “Catholic Faith Network” or “CFN”.

5. Following the current measures taken by Nassau and Suffolk public schools, all schools in our diocese are closed through March 20, 2020.  However, we continue to monitor the situation and will adapt and update as needed.  Our parish Religious Education programs will remain suspended until Tuesday, April 14, 2020.  Again, we continue to monitor the situation and will adapt and update as needed.

6. The rectory office, for the current time, will be accessible through phone access from 9 AM to 2 PM. from Monday to Friday.  In case of emergencies the parish emergency number will access the priest on duty.

In closing, I am very conscious of how most of the time our crosses are personal and contingent upon our individual situations and circumstances.  This Lent 2020 is far different as the Coronavirus presents us with a common cross that we are being invited to carry together as people of faith.  When Jesus said, “pick up your cross and follow me” he did not mean that we should go out and seek suffering for the sake of suffering.  In saying this, however, He was telling us that it is how we bear our crosses that will determine what kind of disciple we are.  May we as individuals and as a parish, help one another to bear this common cross.  May we keep one another in prayer.  And may we as individuals and as a parish grow in being disciples of Christ.

With prayers,

Fr. Bill

Rev. Msgr. William E. Koenig
